If your keypad, intercom, or fob reader says BFT on it, your access control system falls under one of three families: the Deimos series, the Rigel series, and the newer Phobos units that BFT started shipping around 2018. The Deimos keypads and card readers are analog units that link to the gate board with a four-wire run. The Rigel adds a small digital display and requires a separate 24-volt feed, which is where a lot of handyman installs go wrong. The Phobos line is the one that works with the app and needs a network path; if the gate sits far from the house, that’s a genuine design conversation.

The quickest way to identify your model is the small gray sticker on the back of the keypad. It has the series name followed by a version number: Deimos Ultra BT, Rigel 5, Phobos N, and so on. Write that down before you order any part. The second thing to check is your wire. A Deimos uses unshielded 18-gauge pair; a Phobos should have shielded cable because it carries data. A supplier who sells you a Deimos keypad for a Rigel board gets you a unit that lights up and does nothing, and that’s a waste of a Houston workday to discover.

On the OEM question: BFT’s own keypads are well built, but their plastic housings yellow and crack in the Texas sun faster than the metal-faced aftermarket units from brands like Vides. Like any circuit that’s exposed to weather, BFT access control work is part mechanical and part electrical. You can safely do the diagnostic steps: clean the keypad face with a dry cloth, check that the fuses inside the gate enclosure aren’t blown, and make sure the post lid isn’t letting water sit on top of the board. You can also safely replace a keypad enclosure that has a gasket and pre-fitted plug.

What goes wrong for homeowners is the wiring and board pairing. BFT boards use a configurable input that can be programmed in several ways; if you bridge the wrong terminals, you’ll either blow the board fuse repeatedly or, worse, diagnose a dead motor because the safety input is shorted closed.
